AAW Demonstrator

That's me demonstrating at the 2019 AAW International Symposium in Raleigh, NC.

I'm available for club demos. I can travel and or I can do a "Live Remote & Interactive" demo, as shown in the AAW Journal article that I co-wrote with Lyle jamieson & Alan Zenreich. Below is a description and some pictures of my demos. I have done well over 90 remote demos to clubs all over the USA and England since the beggining of the Covid era!!

1. "All about the Hawaiian Calabash".
I wrote an article for Woodturning Magazine, issue #308 about this subject. You will learn about the history of the calabash, different types, types of wood used and much more. I will then turn a round bottom, traditional "Palewa" Hawaiian Calabash.

2. " A box with hand chased threads".
I use the very old English traditional way of doing threads, with hand chasers. Basic turning knowledge is needed for the hands on, but the demo is for all skill levels. I demonstrated this in Raleigh NC at the 2019 AAW symposium.

3. "How to repair a bowl the Hawaiian way and history of the Calabash"
I start with a short introduction to the history of the Hawaiian calabash. Different shapes, sizes, types of woods used and more.
Then we move on to how to apply Pewa or butterfly patches and Huini pegs on cracks. I also cover other ways the Hawaiian used to repair cracks.

Contact me for pricing and availability. With remote demos, I can help you with your club's set up.
We can "mix & match" I have been asked to do a demo that includes how to turn a calabash, how to apply the pewa patches and a brief history of the Hawaiian calabash.
